Symptoms of Damaged Axles
Poor Performance
When one of your heavy-duty axles breaks, you’ll likely experience a significant loss in power. On trucks with four wheels that receive power, this means you’ve lost 25% of your available power, for the damaged axle is still spinning. For trucks with open differentials, this means you may have lost 50% of your power. This puts the rest of your axles under a lot of stress, which increases the risk that they’ll snap too.
Loud Clunking Sounds
When one of your heavy-duty axles breaks or warps, your entire drivetrain is affected. One of the most common symptoms of a snapped axle is a loud clunking sound. This sound usually means your differential is trying to spin your axle, only for it to fail to connect. In some cases, the busted axle may even seize up and halt power altogether. This would also cause loud clunking noises to occur.
